Domaine Pigeat, Quincy, Loire
A classic ‘polycultural’ property, the domaine was initially set up in 1967 when the family had 1.5 hectares of vines… and 200 hectares of farmland.
In 2001 the wine side of the business was taken over by son Philippe, who has raised the vineyard area to its current 7.3 hectares, planted 100% with sauvignon blanc – these include two plots of old vines over 80 years old.
A committed Cartesian, Philippe runs his vines according the principals of La Lutte Raisonnée – a totally rational approach to sustainability that involves no use of weedkillers and that is in stark contrast to the higher production practices of the majority of growers in this small appellation.
Aiming for 50 to 55 hectos/hectare, the vines are grassed through or lightly ‘travaillé’ depending on the plot and all the vines are de-budded in the spring to control yields and ensure a nice, healthy crop.
Picking is by machine or hand (especially for the oldest vines) and after pressing in a pneumatic press and a cold settling, fermentations are at controlled temperatures in stainless steel of fibreglass vats and bottling is after a long maturation sur lies fines.
