Millamolong, Orange, Australia

The property illustrates perfectly what we are about. It is small, the wines are all handmade, only 64 cases are exported to the UK each year (which we are delighted to get all of), and there is an infectious passion from the Ashton family which brings their wines to life. Millamolong's fame goes back to 1930 when the four Ashton brothers travelled to England. On a shoestring budget, the four horsemen (as depicted on the labels) took on the cream of British society. The British Press considered them a joke initially, but they ended up being the lossing finalists in the Champion Cup. Their reputation was assured and from then on they were the toast of the polo world, receiving invitations to play from all over the world. Polo remains a core element of Millamolong Station.

The winery is based in the cool climate area of New South Wales and 28 hectares are planted to vines. The vineyard uses few chemicals. Sheep are used as fertilizers and lawnmowers between the vines on a regular basis. Another reason why Millamolong can avoid the use of chemicals is because the vineyard is high and positioned so that it does not suffer from diseases that other vineyards might have. The unique flavour of Millamolong grapes partly originates from the undulating ground, which is a characteristic of the vineyard.
