October featured a mixed case of Burgundies, so it only seems fair to balance our offering by discounting two wines from Bordeaux this month. We are conscious of current conditions, and so both the claret and the white Bordeaux are really good value wines and both are drinking beautifully. As with all our Wine of the Month offers, we have applied a 10% discount to the price.

 

Edward Parker Wines Reserve Claret, Bordeaux 2006 – One level up from our popular GOC (Good Ordinary Claret), this delicious claret is made by our old friend Michel Bouchereau. It is slightly less oaked than his Ch. Grand Terrier des Eyriaux so is a little lighter but still has ripe fruit and great depth and firmness. Merlot based (60%), 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and then 5% of both Malbec and Petit Verdot, grapes too infrequently used in the claret blend nowadays in our opinion. We like it, which is why we are only too happy to put our name to it. We are also delighted to be able to offer magnums.

 

Ch. de Beauregard-Ducourt Blanc, Bordeaux 2007 – Finding a good, inexpensive white Bordeaux is difficult. Finding a good, inexpensive white Bordeaux which is made with the traditional blend is nigh-on impossible. We can claim success. This light, fresh and eminently drinkable wine is made from 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 50% Sémillon and 10% Muscadelle (giving lovely richness) from vines which average 25 years of age just to the south east of Bordeaux, and has all the traits you would want from a white Bordeaux. Forget those over grassy Sauvignons many are now producing under the ‘white Bordeaux’ label.
