Maison Champy, Beaune, Burgundy - Discounts Offered

Discount on Wines from Maison Champy, Burgundy

Last Wednesday we hosted a dinner in London for Pierre Meurgey of Maison Champy. We had an excellent evening and the wines showed very well. Pierre agreed to offer a discount to all those who came to the dinner – we persuaded him to rather broaden the offer to all our customers. We are delighted to therefore be able to offer the wines below at a 7½% discount to our normal List price. The notes are from our wine consultant, Derek Smedley MW, from his tastings that night.

We have also enclosed our comments on a new champagne we are stocking which drank very well. The Jean Comyn range includes a straight Non-Vintage Blanc de Blancs and a Vintage 2002 Blanc de Blanc as well. You can find more details on our website at www.edwardparkerwines.co.uk.

Some of these wines are sitting in Beaune and are being collected by us next week so please do let us know of any interest as soon as possible.

Jean Comyn Brut NV                                                      £17.95                                   £16.60                                   £199.20
The classic grape mix of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay has produced a wine with richness well balanced by an attractive mid freshness. The nose is fleshy, full of ripe melon but behind is fresher greengage giving enough acidity to balance the sweetness and ensuring that the finish is racy and elegant. All this makes for an attractive glass but there is enough richness of flavour to partner food especially fish.

Bourgogne Blanc 2006                                                   £9.75                                     £9.00                                     £108.00
The mix of melon and greengage gives richness to the nose and a weight of flavour on the palate. There is an attractive freshness behind the sweet fruit ensuring brightness towards the back. Lots of flavours linger on the long finish.

Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc 2006                              £15.50                                   £14.35                                   £172.20
The soils around the beautiful village of Pernand produce a racy mix of flint and mineral in the white wines. The fruit is classic of the grape, lots of greengage backed by apple. There is an attractive sweetness to the fruit on the finish beautifully refreshed by minerals and acidity.
91/100                  2008-11

Saint-Romain Blanc 2007                                              £15.75                                   £14.55                                   £174.60
There is the feeling of power on the nose, the fruit has a fleshy richness and this fills out the palate. There is some nice acidity that refreshes the mid palate but the fruit power dominates and gives it a richer less elegant character.
90/100                  2008-10

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2006                     £57.50                                   £53.25                                   £639.00
At first it appears to be hiding it light under a bushel, the fruit is fragrant but quite light. A re-visit to the nose shows there is real power and depth. The lush mix of melon and greengage is underpinned by fresher apple and refreshed by the slate, mineral mix. There is a lot showing on the finish but so much more to show.
93/100                  2009-15

Bourgogne Rouge 2006                                                 £9.75                                     £9.00                                     £108.00
The nose shows that this is not a heavy weight but a wine that shows all the fragrant charm of Pinot Noir. Fresh cherry intermingles with sweeter mulberry, both underpinned by hints of bilberry. The finish is flowery and long, the flavours linger.
89/100                  2008-09

Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2006             £25.50                                   £23.60                                   £283.20
The nose is a bit tight and closed at the moment but behind the firmness is a rich mix of mulberry, red cherry and bilberry. The palate has lots of powerful flavours, a firm structure but the fruit is surrounded by ripe and supple tannins. It does need time to open up.
91/100                  2009-14

Corton Rouge Grand Cru 2006                                    £37.50                                   £34.75                                   £417.00
The hill of Corton has not only special soils but a micro-climate that seems to get the very best out of Pinot Noir. The nose is action packed, rich and powerful, the weight of ripe fruit underpinned by fresher more red fruit influences. There is richness towards the back, a fleshiness that fills out the finish.

Starter

Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères 2006           £29.95                                   £27.70                                   £332.40
It has all the style that one associates with the village. Although only a premier cru site the richness is so well balanced with mineral acidity it has all the feel of grand cru. The nose is packed with rich greengage fleshed out by some melon but this underpinned by crisp apple, minerals and shale. It has that attractive mixture of richness and elegant freshness.

Main Course

Vosne-Romanée 1èr Cru Les Suchots 2001           £41.25                                   £38.25                                   £459.00
The power of fruit that is there on the nose is reflected on the palate. The layers of flavour give complexity, first mulberry then black cherry and finally bramble. The fruit is ripe giving sweetness on the palate but the tannins, although ripe, do give structure. A wine that is rich yet has stylish elegance,

Cheese

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1èr Cru La Richemone 1999               £44.25                   £40.95                                   £491.40
The powerful flavours fill out both nose and palate. It seems at first to be more black fruit dominated but under the bramble and black cherry is some fresher mulberry and red cherry. The mid-palate is rich and succulent, a depth of fruit that lasts and fills out the finish.
