September Wine of the Month - Warden Abbey Vineyard

September Wine of the Month – A Mixed Case from the Warden Abbey Vineyard - 10% Discount

Following our sporting success at the recent Olympic Games, we thought it was high time we championed another rapidly improving area from our homeland – wine. What better way to toast our athletes’ achievements? More often than not when you mention to people than there have been huge improvements within the English wine-producing industry, they nod with some enthusiasm and interest, maybe mention global warming, and then get distracted by something out of the corner of their eye. So they are none the wiser. So we believe it is time to fuel the enthusiasm and interest and we have put together a mixed case so we can show the breadth of some of the wines being produced here. And please don’t expect sweet wines – these are all dry, something many people don’t seem to expect. Go on, break with convention…try!!!

Warden Abbey Vineyard in Bedfordshire is on the site of a Cistercian Abbey founded in 1135AD which the monks planted to vineyards. It is on the small four acre site that vines were replanted in 1986. The first vintage was produced in 1990 and since then the vineyard has been producing wines which have won a number of awards in the International Wine Challenge; the most prestigious wine competition in the world. The vineyard is planted with five varietals - Bacchus, Regner, Muller Thurgau, Reichensteiner and Madeleine Angevine. These wines are then blended depending on the quantities available under the watchful eye of our own consultant, Derek Smedley MW. Derek’s involvement provides us with the confirmation of the quality of the wines.

As many of our customers have never ventured into the world of English wines we felt it best to offer a mixed case of four separate wines from Warden. Should you want one case of 12 bottles of one specific wine, we can also offer that at our usual 10% discount for the Wine of the Month.

Our mixed case will have three bottles of each of the following wines:

Warden Vineyard 2006 (Regner 40% Reicheinsteiner 40% Bacchus 20%)
Normal Price £8.75/bottle WotM Offer £7.85/bottle
The blend of grapes gives complexity and an attractive mix of fragrant white flowers backed by citrus and richer greengage. The nose has all the charm of spring blossomand elderflower fragrances overlay citrus and fuller greengage.  The palate has layers of flavour, first pear and apple underpinned by fresh lime and enriched by a mix of tropical fruits. Eat with white fish, poultry and pork

Warden Bacchus 2006 (100% Bacchus)                                         Normal Price £9.25/bottle WotM Offer £8.35/bottle
An exciting cross between Riesling/Silvaner and Müller Thurgau; Bacchus is a grape that has a character not too dissimilar to Sauvignon Blanc. The nose is packed with flavour, floral, mown grass, currant leaf and apples. There is complexity on the palate, some sweeter white peach and apricot flesh out the middle, whilst fresh grapefruit gives brightness to the finish. Delicious with shellfish, white fish, chicken and pork.

Warden Celebration 2006 (Regner 60% Reichensteiner 40%)    Normal Price £9.50/bottle WotM Offer £8.55/bottle
To celebrate 20 years of Warden Vineyard they blended Regner and Reichensteiner. The power of the Regner is lightened by the floral charm of Reichensteiner. Full of fruit on the nose, the peach and greengage are refreshed by apple and lime. Rich creamy flavours with layers of fruit, asparagus and apple, peach and citrus are excitingly complex. Towards the back the freshness pushes through leaving the finish flint crisp. Perfect with fuller flavoured seafood, (excellent with crab), fish, poultry and lighter meats.

Warden Special Réserve 2006 (Müller Thurgau 62% Regner 20% Reichensteiner 12%)
Normal Price £8.95/bottle WotM Offer £8.05/bottle
The mix of grapes gives lots of interest, a bouquet of flavour, lively on the nose but more serious on the palate and vibrantly fresh on the finish. There is a lot happening on the nose; it is floral, the citrus freshness fleshed out by an exotic mix of tropical fruits. The palate is racy; pink grapefruit and fresh apple crisping up the middle, underpinned by weightier tropical fruits, white peach and apricot. Ideal with seafood, (try it with lobster), fish, poultry and pork.

The mixed case would normally cost £109.35. With the 10% discount for the Wine of the Month offer, the case is reduced to £98.40.

Prices include duty and VAT. This offer is open only for the month of September 2008 and remains subject to availability. Our usual delivery terms apply. E&EO.
