Wine of the Month – 2006 Bourgogne Aligoté, Maison Champy– 10% Discount

Maison Champy is the oldest négociant in Burgundy and gained new vitality in 1990 when it was bought by Henri and Pierre Meurgey and Pierre Beuchet. It is now rapidly becoming a vineyard owner in its own right. As well as now owning their own vines, they are increasing the control they have over areas which they rent. The key is they control the quality of the fruit coming in from the harvest and their wine-making team has many years of experience.

Bourgogne Aligoté is a regional AOC produced all over Burgundy. The best Aligoté comes from around Auxerre, in the Hautes-Côte de Beaune and Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, and in the Côte Chalonnaise in the Cotes, which gives it its distinct mineral character.

The wine is bright pale lemon with green tints. The palate is packed with zesty lemon, and minerality with a slight floral note coming through. This is a fresh, crisp wine, ideal for the summer. Maison Champy suggest drinking it with snail mousse in a pistachio sauce, but if you don’t have any of that handy, it will go very well with seafood and chicken dishes, or even perfect by itself.
