Bordeaux 2007 En Primeur - Our Top Picks

Bordeaux 2007 En Primeur – The Story So Far

There have been reams of paper from merchants and wine writers about the vintage which we are just beginning to offer. We thought it might be worthwhile to give our ha’penny’s worth (but we’ll keep it short) as the wines are just beginning to be released and let you know where our attention will be focussed.

The headlines are as follows:

  1. It’s all about price. With the Euro having appreciated over 10% since we offered the 2006 en primeur, our friends the Bordelais need to appreciate that asking British customers to pay more for the 2007 vintage is wrong.
  2. Cracking vintage for both dry white and sweet wines. Well worth buying a couple of cases of Sauternes for the future. Best vintage since 2001 for them.
  3. For claret, not one to invest in, but getting Mouton at the opening price would be interesting.
  4. Drinking clarets will be approachable early, but as Derek Smedley MW has said “those with the best sites and who had worked hard in the vineyard, green harvesting and leaf stripping have made some very presentable wines, wines for early drinking….”. We believe it is worth popping a couple of cases in your cellar.
Our top wines of the vintage are as follows:

Magnificent Seven                                           Best Seven by Value

Cheval Blanc                                          Clerc Milon
Mouton-Rothschild                                 Doisy Daëne (Released at £240 In Bond)
Léoville-Las-Cases                               Clos Réné
Ausone                                                    Coutet, Barsac
Margaux                                                  Grand Puy Lacoste
Pavie                                                        Duhart Milon
Yquem                                                      Potensac

Those who have disappointed us

Pontet Canet                                                    L’Arrosée
Lynch Bages                                                    Grand Corbin
Calon Segur                                                     Larcis Ducasse
Durfort Vivens                                                  Pavie-Macquin
du Tertre                                                           Gazin
Pape Clement                                                  Filhot
Smith-Haut-Lafitte Rouge (but we like the white)

Please let us know if you have specific interest in a specific wine. We will be sending regular emails on the 2007 wines once a few more have been released with our view on the wines and most importantly the price of the wines. Please let us know if you would prefer not to receive these. Those that are over-price in our opinion will not be offered.
